Support Popuar Vote

Under the National Popular Vote plan, the candidate receiving the most popular votes in all 50 states will become president. The National Popular Vote plan is an interstate compact that works within the Electoral College. States enacting the plan pledge to award their electors to the winner of the popular vote. The compact goes into effect once states possessing a majority of electoral votes (270 or more) enact the plan. The plan does not abolish the Electoral College, but the winner-take-all system of awarding electoral votes. The plan is Constitutional in that Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution gives states the exclusive power to award electoral votes as they see fit.

Under the National Popular Vote plan, there are no second place winners.  No “battleground states” and “safe states”. Every state matters. Every VOTE matters.  Support Popular Vote is a 501(c)4 organization committed to enacting the National Popular Vote plan in state legislatures across the country. It is headquartered in Lady Lake, Florida. Tom Golisano, entrepreneur, philanthropist and founder of Paychex, the second-largest payroll processing company in the United States, is the organization's national spokesperson. In May of 2011, Former Sen. Fred Thompson and former Governors Chet Culver and Jim Edgar joined as co-champions.

Eight states (Hawaii, Washington state, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey and Vermont) and Washington, D.C. have passed the National Popular Vote bill. They represent 132 of the 270 electoral votes necessary for passage. The bill has passed in more than 30 legislative chambers, and enjoys 75% approval in polls across the country.
